New Zealand has a mature and stable cinema market. Cinema admissions have totalled within the narrow 15.3 to 15.5 million tickets range each year since 2005. Screen numbers have increased by almost 50 screens in this time.

The arrival of premium 3D movies is currently the major driver in admissions in New Zealand.

Forecasts

New Zealands cinema market is both well attended and well provided with cinema screens. This strong position is expected to continue in the coming years with some growth in admissions, and consequently cinema screens, possibly in response to an anticipated population increase around 4.5%. The popularity of ˜art-house" movies, and enhancements of comfort, food and cafe styling, etc., is expected to continue to attract increasing numbers of mature audiences to the movies.
